Winning Justifications:

he idea of the Mawakeb Al Ajer Initiative emerged in the year 2000G and was implemented in the year 2003G. It is an initiative that seeks to recycle the items disposed of by displaying them at a mini shop for sale or offering. The initiative targets all members of the community by providing or selling (dispensed) items to others who are eligible to have them. Collectibles are offered at affordable prices that are accessible to all. All community individuals can participate in this initiative by being a donner, buyer or beneficiary. The initiative has participated in several events and exhibitions to promote its activities and to open the door to voluntary work throughout the year, where they have built a database of volunteers. The initiative works in an orderly manner as the work goes through several phases. The first phase starts with receiving of the collectibles which include (books, appliances, furniture, accessories, clothing, children's toys, etc.), then comes the sorting phase, which implies the grouping of collectibles based on their type and quality. In this phase, collections are either retained for use or disposed of, if inappropriate, by forwarding them to dedicated companies in the recycling process. Last phase includes the display of collectibles, after having been properly processed, in the section assigned thereto in the market. The reward-processions shop consists of two floors and an outdoor section. Each floor consists of more than 3 rooms for display of collectibles in an orderly and tidy manner. The shop is managed by staff and volunteers supervised by the initiative launcher. The shop rent and the salaries of employees are paid from the financial revenues of the initiative, and the remaining income is donated to charitable organizations within the Kingdom such as the Taif Society for Orphan Care and the Kidney Patients Society, etc.

This initiative is considered social, voluntary and environmental:

  • (Social): Promoting the concept of voluntary work.
  • (Economic): Providing collected items to low-income people at reasonable prices.
  • (Environmental): Seeking to recycle used collectibles and sort damaged non-repairable items for onward dispatch to recycling companies.
